How The Humane Society Of The United States.
Most people have a perception of the humane society of the united states as being an organization that has many animals which are waiting for people to adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. The simple words that are used to illustrate the complex work of the organization is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
There are thousands of animal species in the world. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. Although most of the organizations work is carried out in the United States, HSUS has extended to other countries with some its work being to rescue some of the animals in the Ocean. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. The list is however long.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. The organization is also presenting pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. It is the aim of the organization that through the legislation animal cruelty will be dealt with. There are instances when disasters occur, such as the Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami which hit South East Asia. When such incidences happen, the HSUS is always ready to send a team which will be involved in the rescue of animals. The organization also thinks about the welfare of backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice and raccoons by educating homeowners of how to peacefully coexist with them.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. In the AHA, there were disagreements among the members and this led to a split with those who left forming the current Humane society of the United States.
The main goal of the HSUS was to ensure that all types of animal cruelty are eliminated in the whole world. The first work of HSUS was to push for the de legislation of law that required animal shelters to turn over animals to be used for research work. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
